Growing up I was taught to be reliant on myself. The advice often tossed around my home was “No one will do for you what you won’t do for yourself.”, “No one cares about your feelings”, “No one will be there for you except you.” As life trudged on and I got older, I realized that more often than not people would in fact let you down. People that I trusted, valued and even believed had the best for me were often the sources of my largest hurts. I spent years nursing wounds and looking for another person to fill the void that seemed to get bigger and bigger with each hurt.
What I have learned is that people are just people, and they will let you down. I have let people down because I’m just human and flawed. Sometimes life gets busy, other times we let each other down because we are just too caught up in our own problems, we forget someone else may be struggling as well. Maybe God removed someone from your circle because he knew they were not good for this journey. We never know what God’s plan is, but we do know that God never intended for us to rely on people for the things we were supposed to look for with God.
So often we worry and stress, we tell our problems to our friends and whoever will listen but never to our Father in Heaven. We lie awake at night and fret over what happened, what is happening and what is to come, not once taking a moment to realize that God is there waiting for you to lean on him. Over the years I have made great friends, wonderful people that love and support me. People that would hold my hands at stressful doctors’ offices, that would pray for my children, my marriage and me, ones that would sit and laugh with me to make sure I wasn’t dwelling on the problems I have to face. As wonderful as they are, as much of a blessing as they are, nothing compares to the peace that comes with relying on God. Trusting him has filled me beyond measure. I may not know the reasons, but I do know that no matter what, God’s promises stand forever.
Isaiah 41:13 For I, the Lord your God, will hold your right hand. Saying to you, “Fear not, i will help you.”
Psalms 18:2 The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer; My God, my strength, in whom I will trust; My shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.
Proverbs 3:5-6 Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths.
Jeremiah 29:11 For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.
Each of these verses is just a small snippet of the thousands of verses that can be found in the Bible telling us of God’s promises to be there for us. He will never leave us, let us down, or hurt us if we but only trust him with all our hearts. Somedays are easier to trust than others, it’s a work in progress and I am so thankful that I serve a God that is patient, loving and quick to show me the correct path.
I pray each of you begin a journey of trusting God with all your worries, problems, joys and everything in between. Nothing is too big or small for God to handle. So, while people will let you down, remember God will never let you down. Jesus trusted God all the way to the cross and back from the grave. Let us take a moment each day to trust our Lord and give him the reins of our life. Let us find the peace and comfort of a Jesus filled life. Not a life without trouble or trials, but a life abundant and filled with joy despite the trials and troubles. May each of you find God’s helping hand as you go through your week. Praising God for his many blessings always. With love!
