Throughout the Bible there are many promises from God. Nearly every chapter in every book has a promise that God has given us. He is with us, He has plans and purpose for us, He knows our steps and goes before us. So many promises. But what do those promises tell us about God-the promise giver?
Isaiah 26:3-4 You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You. Trust in the Lord forever, For in Yah, the Lord is everlasting strength.
Deuteronomy 31:8 And the Lord, He is the One who goes before you. He will be with you, He will not leave you nor forsake you, do not fear nor be dismayed.
These two verses show us that God’s promises are strength and peace to those who trust in Him and that He will never leave us. It’s easy to look at the surface and see how simple it is that “God will never leave us and will be the strength of those who trust.” But what happens when our faith and trust falter? Does God’s promises falter as well? The answer is No. How amazing is that!
A perfect place to begin is the story of Abraham and Sarah. They were given a promise; the promise of a child and to be the parents of nations. Their descendants were to be as numerous as the stars. Yet not once but twice, Abraham faltered in faith when he told Sarah to tell the Pharoah and Abimelech, she was his sister. He feared for his life and did not trust God. Yet God had promised to make him the father of nations. There was no heir at this time. If God promised, wouldn’t that mean that Abraham would have been ok? Wouldn’t that have meant that there was no need for him to trade his integrity and faith for false security? He could have trusted God. And despite his falters, God did not falter. God’s promise was not dependent, affected, or even swayed the slightest by Abraham’s lack of faith. Abraham’s descendants are more numerous than the stars.
Jeremiah 29:11 For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.
This verse is yet another verse that shows God’s promise to not harm us and that He wants to give us peace, blessings, hope and a future with Him if we would but submit to Him. God’s promises are of hope, protection and peace. That does not mean things will be easy or we won’t face challenges. It means that through each trial we can have peace in knowing that the promise giver, is our almighty God who never breaks a promise. He has a purpose, a plan, for each of us but first we must understand the ultimate promise. The promise that the Bible points to with every beautifully written word. Salvation and everlasting life with God.
Romans 10:9-10, 13 That if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For “whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
A promise is only as good as the one who gives the promises. Our trust in the One who gives the promises is completely reliant upon our relationship with Him. And yet even without a good relationship, when we have little to no faith, felt as though hope is lost, when, like Abraham and many other individuals in the Bible, we trade faith for false security, God’s promises still stand firm and true. Because God is perfect and His promises are forever.
I pray each of you come to learn how wonderful the promise giver is and all the things He has promised us that He will never take away from us. And if someone should not know the promise giver I pray they heed the call of the Holy Spirit and come to know the One true God that has plans and purpose for them, that knew them first and stitched them in the womb, that will give them peace, be with them always and will give them the eternal gift of salvation and life in heaven. May we all see the truth of God and his everlasting promises and praise the promise giver for all He has given. May God bless each of you and bring you closer to him in reading and prayer each day!
