Power of Words

By

Words, the average person uses 16,000 words per day. We speak them and we write them. We use words to communicate wants, needs, desires, dislikes, ideas and news. Words are an important part of our everyday lives. And yet words have so much power. In the beginning God made us in his image. He gave us the ability to speak, to pray, to converse with him. It is only fitting that he also gave us a taste of the power the spoken word carries. The power of one word can encourage or destroy those around you and even yourself. Words can bring peace, start wars. They can curse or bless.
Proverbs 18:21 Death and life are in the power of the tongue, And those who love it will eat its fruit.

The way we speak to one another and ourselves can influence our perspectives. When we speak negativity, curses, and bad things over ours and others lives, we are destroying the ability to see others, ourselves and life in general the way God sees. We refuse to see the beauty, the blessing, the lesson, and gift that God sees. Each person has a purpose. Each moment of your day has a lesson which always turns into a blessing. Yet our perspective does not allow us to see that if we do not speak from a place of thanksgiving, praise, positivity. Words tell us more than what a person is saying, it often shows you the condition of the heart.
Matthew 12:34 Brood of vipers! How can you, being evil, speak good things? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.

Here we see where Jesus says that the abundance of the heart pours out of the mouth. When we speak nothing but negative things and cut at people with our words we are allowing the negativity of our heart to pour out. Often we pour that hurt, hatred, and harmful poison over, not only ourselves, but those around us. We make ourselves and others miserable because we do not bring joy, encouragement, positivity to the table. Instead we call ourselves mean names as we look in the mirror. We tell ourselves we are not enough, we will never succeed. We tell others how they are going to mess up, not be enough, not succeed. We begin our days and end our days with negativity. Each day we pour negativity over us and those around us as we curse our days with poisonous venom that we just spew from our mouths. And often wonder why we cannot find joy. If we are only looking for the bad things, how can we ever see the good that God has for us?

Ephesians 4:29 Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers.
In this verse we can see that we are told to speak good. We are to encourage, build up, help one another. Grace is to be given and the instruction for improvement of moral and intellectual mindsets are important. We are to learn to speak truths over ourselves and others. We should speak blessings and positives over people and our days. We don’t often realize how wounding words can be, how your words can become someone’s inner voice that continues to tear down long after the words have been spoken. We don’t see the scars and wounds that we leave on people when we are not careful with how we speak to one another. We don’t even realize how often we tear our own selves down as we stand in front of the mirror. We just speak death over ourselves and everyone else, not understanding why we often feel like we are dying. Yet God tells us the truth. God tells us how he sees us in his word. God speaks life, light and truth. He has since the beginning.

I pray we all take the time to be more careful with the words we speak. May the Lord grant us all hearts full of gratitude, love, light and truth. May He help us to ourselves and others the way he sees us. That He will help us to see all the little moments to praise and honor Him even when the storm is raging around us or when we are dealing with difficult people. May the Lord help us to pour from our mouths the good He pours into our hearts. I pray each of you learn who God is, who you were made in the image of, so that you can see yourselves and others the way God sees you. A creation worth dying for, worth loving, worth helping. May each of you see how important God is in your life and how the power of words is a gift from Him that we should not use lightly or recklessly. May we speak words of encouragement, life and blessings over others and ourselves. May the Lord help us to start our days and end them with a heart full of gratitude and grace for he has given us so much that we should freely offer the same to those around us. I pray blessings and a relationship with God over each of you.

Perfect example of why we should practice “taming” our tongue every day.
